MONT SAINT MICHEL \u2013 The<\/em> Blessing of an angel<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Rising out of the mists and fog, this fairy-tale castle is a unique<\/span> place<\/span> that began with a church built on a massive<\/span> granit<\/span>e rock by bishop Aubert in 709 as homage<\/span> to Archangel<\/span> Michael<\/span> after the Saint<\/span> had visited<\/span><\/span> him.<\/span><\/p>

Two centuries later, a community<\/span> of Benedictine monks<\/a><\/span> formed<\/span> at the Mont<\/span> and erected a Roman-style abbey<\/a>.<\/span> The site<\/span><\/span> became a symbol<\/span> of resistance<\/span> against English invasions<\/span> for centuries, which explains the surrounding walls. A gothic<\/span> abbey<\/span> would later erect<\/span> on the rubbles of the old one, which served as a prison<\/span> during the French revolution<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

VEZELAY \u2013 The Relics of Mary Magdalene<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The monastery<\/span><\/a> built on the hill hosted<\/span> the relics<\/span> that belonged to Mary Magdalene<\/span> and has drawn pilgrims for 2,000 years to see the remains of one of the road companion<\/span> of Jesus Christ<\/span>. Pilgrimages came to a halt<\/span> in 1279 when Mary\u2019s remains<\/a><\/span> were officially found in Provence.
<\/span>500 years of religious wars followed by a revolution<\/span> were not kind to the site<\/span> of the Saint who witnessed Jesus\u2019 crucifixion<\/span>. But in the 1800s, a majestic<\/span> roman<\/span>–style<\/span> basilica<\/span> with unique sculpted<\/span> stones was erected where the Saint has finally rested in peace.<\/span><\/p>

ROCAMADOUR \u2013 Sanctuary of Saint Amadour<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The announcement of a miracle<\/span> in 1148 and the discovery of Saint Amadour\u2019s intact<\/span> body in 1166 made it a sacred<\/span> village<\/span> since the Middle-ages and has attracted pilgrims from across Europe, including Henri II of England, who traveled to thank the Virgin Mary. Perched<\/span> on a 150-meter cliff overlooking the Dordogne River<\/span>, it is the highest pilgrimage site<\/span><\/a><\/span> in France.<\/span><\/p>

Every year, hundred of thousands of people climb the 216 stairs of the Great Stairway on their knees that lead to the forecourt of the sanctuaries<\/span> and the Basilica<\/span> Saint-Sauveur. SAINTE-FOY DE CONQUES – A Christian Martyr<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The abbey of Sainte-Foy de Conques, erected between 1045 and 1110 carefully preserves<\/span> Sainte-Foy\u2019s relics, a young gallo-roman Christian girl who was martyred in Agen during the 3rd<\/sup> century. In the following centuries, an astonishing treasure<\/span> was established around the statue<\/span> of the Saint, covering her in gold and precious stones.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

SAINTE BEAUME \u2013 Blessed by Mary Magdalene<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

First a geological<\/span> curiosity<\/span><\/span> and one of the most ancient<\/span> pilgrimage site<\/span> in the world where Mary Magdalene is believed to have spent 30 years of her life. Protected by the Dominicans<\/span> and visited<\/span><\/span> by Saint Louis in 1254, the Church and the Kingdom of Provence expanded the village and even built a hostelry<\/span> to encourage<\/span> more pilgrims to visit the Holy cave. NOTRE DAME DE LA SALETTE – The Apparition of Mary<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

In 1846, a globe<\/span> of light opened to two shepherd boys to reveal<\/span> a woman seated on a stone with her head in her hands. This apparition<\/span> of the Blessed Virgin in this village near Grenoble was \u2018verified\u2019 by the pope as a site<\/span> of Faith where, at times, 3,000 pilgrims<\/strong> may pass through in a day.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

CARCASSONNE – The Shroud of Christ<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Built as a center for commerce<\/span> on a Celt<\/span> village in the first century BC, the Romans fortified<\/span> the city with massive walls against invasions, still standing to this day surrounding St Michael\u2019s cathedral.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Since the XIII century, the medieval<\/span> town of Carcassonne<\/a><\/span> has displayed a special<\/span> cloth that may have been used to wrap the body of Jesus after his death: The Holy Shroud of Chris<\/strong>t. According to legend, after a series<\/span> of eleven miracles widely observed<\/span> in 1403, Pope Benoit XIII and King Charles VI rendered both a holy and royal<\/span> judgment<\/span> ordering Augustine monks<\/a><\/span> to protect<\/span> the Holy Shroud.
<\/span>But there is something else.\u00a0 <\/span>A part of history<\/span> the Catholic<\/span> Church prefers<\/span> to forget\u2026
<\/span>During the XI an XII century, a competing religion that rejected<\/span> the pope\u2019s authority<\/span> and only recognized the New Testament was flourishing<\/span> in the region:<\/span> Catharism<\/a><\/span>. Considered<\/span> as heretics,<\/span> Cathars were exterminated.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

NOTRE DAME DE PARIS <\/strong>\u2013 From Jupiter to Mary<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Built on a site<\/span> erected by Roman fishermen<\/strong> in honor of Jupiter<\/strong>, two Roman churches briefly saw the light before Notre Dame. After 200 years of construction,<\/span> the 130-meter masterpiece of early Gothic cathedral was completed<\/span> in 1345 in honor<\/span> of the Virgin Mary.<\/span><\/p>

SAINTE CHAPELLE \u2013 The Relics of Christ<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

In 1243, King Louis IX \u2013 who later became a Saint, acquires Christ\u2019s crown of thorns<\/strong>, fragments<\/span> of the Holy cross and shroud for 135,000 livres from the king of Constantinople and erects a gigantic church to host the most wanted relic in the world, for the same price as the Crown.<\/span><\/p>
